Student Library Internship

CANTERBURY LIBRARY INTERNS ARE COLLEGE READY!
Fourth and fifth grade Canterbury Students have the opportunity to participate in our Library Internship Program. They will gain skills and experience that will help them succeed in institutions of higher learning and succeed in life.

Our Library Internship Program will introduce participating students to:
  • Service-learning programs
  • Database systems - cataloging and classification.

Students will also gain experience in serving the community and providing mentorship.

LIBRARY INTERNSHIP GUIDELINES
As a library intern, you are a leader, a role model and a creator. Younger students and your classmates will look up to you for guidance and assistance at the library. It is important that you set a great example: the way you behave, and approach others matters.

You are expected to follow all the Canterbury Library Guidelines, but the following rules are highlighted as an intern:

  • Absolutely no food or drinks allowed at the library. Please eat your food outside before you enter!
  • Keep your voices to a minimum level to alleviate the noise in the library.
  • No playing at the library! Playing is encouraged outside in the yard but NOT in the library! You will be immediately dismissed from your position and duties.
  • Sign in by the reference desk when you enter to start your shift.
  • There will be no penalty for unfinished work but do as much as you can!

THREE LIBRARY INTERNSHIP POSITIONS
Psssst! You can have more than one position, if you'd like!

  1. Library Artist
  2. Library Assistant
  3. Class Library Representative

LIBRARY ARTIST
As a library artist, you have absolute creative freedom in the library! The possibilities are endless! If you would like to embark on a project for the library, you are more than welcome to pitch your ideas and we will assist you in drafting out a plan to make your idea into a reality. You will also assist in creating monthly decorations for any upcoming holidays and events, such as library programs or the Scholastic Book Fair!

LIBRARY ASSISTANT
As a library assistant, you will place books back where they belong and zone your designated library shelf. You will master the Dewey Decimal System and other cataloging systems practiced at the library. By the end of the first semester, you will be able to navigate the library and our database system effortlessly and efficiently.

You will also have the opportunity to innovate and embark on library projects and help with seasonal decorating. You are more than welcome to create any character art to help locate their books in the library.

CLASS LIBRARY REPRESENTATIVE
As a class library representative, you will provide mentorship to first and grade students and ensure guidance in finding the perfect book! You will also guide students on how to properly use any library materials, such as a shelf marker or library stool. You will also demonstrate how to properly place books back on the shelf and use the Dewey Decimal Chart if they would like to search independently.

If you'd like, you can volunteer to read to a class during their library Story Time!
